  1. 408 billion gallons of water per day were withdrawn from surface and groundwater sources for off-stream use in 2000. Of this total, 47.8 percent was withdrawn for generation of thermoelectric power, approximately 33.6 percent was used for irrigation, and about 10.6 percent went to public water supply.
  2. Approximately 100 million wetland acres remain in the 48 contiguous states, but about 60,000 acres are lost annually. Wetlands provide water quality protection, fish and wildlife habitat, natural floodwater storage, and reduction of erosion by surface water.
  3. According to the World Health Organization in 2005, more than 5 million people die every year from contaminated water or water-related diseases.

Among the many environmental problems that offend and concern us, perhaps none is as powerful and dramatic as water pollution. Ugly, scummy water full of debris, sludge, and dark foam is surely one of the strongest and most easily recognized symbols of our misuse of the environment. Water pollution can have dire consequences for vegetation, animal life, and human health.
