School Violence
Incidents such as the shootings at Virgina Tech in 2007 and Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999 as well as other school shootings in late September and early October 2006 have highlighted growing fears about violence in schools. A study issued in 2001 reported that more than 2.5 million crimes against students occurred during the 1999 school year. About 186,000 of those were violent crimes; more violence against students occurred in school than out of school.
On April 20, 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris detonated homemade bombs and opened fire on fellow students in the cafeteria of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
