In a nationwide survey, 17.4 percent of students reported having carried some kind of weapon to school at least once.
In 2003, approximately one in ten high school seniors reported having been threatened or injured at school.
The likelyhood that a male student will carry a weapon to school increases with age, while the likelyhood that a female will do the same decreases.
Students have a 1 in 1.7 million chance of being murdered while at school.

School Violence

Incidents such as the shootings at Virgina Tech in 2007 and Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999 as well as other school shootings in late September and early October 2006 have highlighted growing fears about violence in schools. A study issued in 2001 reported that more than 2.5 million crimes against students occurred during the 1999 school year. About 186,000 of those were violent crimes; more violence against students occurred in school than out of school.
