  1. Among violent crimes against females in 2003, 38 percent were committed by a friend or acquaintance and 19 percent were committed by an intimate—a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend—of the victim.
  2. During 1996, for every 1000 female college students, there were 19 completed rapes and 16 attempted rapes.
  3. Sometimes rape involves more than one attacker. If there are three or more attackers, the crime is known as gang rape. About 8 percent of all rapes in the United States are gang rapes.
  4. In a 1992 survey of American women aged eighteen and older, 13 percent of the respondents reported having been the victim of at least one rape, where rape was defined as unwelcome oral, anal or vaginal penetration achieved through the use or threat of force.

Rape   

Rape is a serious crime in which one person has sexual intercourse with another without that person's consent. The use of this term was once limited to cases in which a man forced a woman to have sex with him. Today, however, the definition has been expanded to apply to both male and female victims. It also includes cases in which the rapist used threats or deception, rather than physical force, to get the victim to submit.
