The word race refers to a group of people who share certain physical characteristics, such as skin color. Racial distinctions have assumed enormous importance in society. Prejudice and discrimination created economic, political, and social barriers for people of color. Even when the belief in white supremacy began to fade, many people of color remained at a disadvantage in society. The inequalities between different racial groups are a source of continuing tension.
