  1. During World War II, the first nuclear weapons were used when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan on August 6, 1945.
  2. On May 20, 1956, the first nuclear fusion bomb was dropped from an airplane over Bikini Atoll.
  3. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was founded by the United Nations in 1957. Its task is to verify treaty compliance through an elaborate inventory procedure including on-site inspections at regular intervals.
  4. Under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the five declared nuclear weapons states--the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and China--agree to not assist other states in acquiring nuclear weapons. They also consent to reduce and eventually eliminate their own nuclear arsenals.
