Juvenile Drug Abuse
Drug abuse includes the use of an illegal drug (such as heroin or LSD), prescription or over-the-counter drug (such as cough syrup), or socially acceptable drug (such as tobacco and alcohol) for a purpose other than directed, in a greater amount than directed, or in a different manner than directed. In the United States, the highest rates of drug use are among young people age 16 to 20.
The Monitoring the Future survey, conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan every year since 1975, measures the extent of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use among high school students as well as students' attitudes toward drug abuse.
