The first law limiting immigration to the U.S. was the Chinese Exclusion Act, passed in 1882.
There were 5,089,589 more immigrants to the U.S. in 1998 than in 1951.
After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the U.S. stopped allowing the entry of refugees fleeing persecution in other countries for a period of three months. This left 22,000 people stranded.
It costs $100 to get a border-crossing card for those 15 years old and over. For those younger than 15, it costs $13, but only if a parent is applying for a card as well.
