  1. The president, the vice-president, the secretary of state, and the secretary of defense make up the National Security Council, which was established by the National Security Act of 1947.
  2. On June 6, 2002, President Bush proposed a major reorganization of the federal government, creating a permanent cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security.
  3. In 1952 President Truman created the National Security Agency (NSA) under the authority of the Secretary of Defense. The NSA replaced the Armed Forces Security Agency and initially focused on code-breaking and other intelligence activities.
  4. For fiscal year 2005, the Department of Defense had an estimated budget of nearly $402 billion.

Following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the United States began taking more aggressive actions to protect the American people and way of life from terrorism. National or homeland security traditionally involved defending the homeland against foreign military attack. In today's world, however, threats to a nation's security can come from both outside and inside its borders.
