For most Americans, owning one's home is the American dream. Unfortunately, for many Americans, being able to purchase a home can be difficult. Various physical, economic, social, and political problems continue to disrupt people's lives and leave many without regular shelter. One-half to three-quarters of a million people lack a place to sleep on any given night in the United States, and 3.5 million will be homeless at some time during the year.
Homelessness---a situation in which an individual or family lacks permanent housing---has been a problem throughout human history.
