Drinking refers to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Many Americans drink alcohol, which produces a sense of relaxation and euphoria. Moderate drinking does not harm most adults. Still, many people in the United States drink too much. Men who have more than fourteen drinks a week or four drinks at one time and women who have more than seven drinks a week or three drinks at one time are at risk for alcohol abuse or dependence.
The abuse of alcohol is very costly to society. In the United States, alcohol-related diseases, accidents, lost time from work, and rehabilitation cost billions of dollars each year.
