Domestic Violence
Domestic violence tends to be a pattern of behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Domestic violence is not limited to any specific socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, or religious group, and same-sex abuse among intimates is just as prevalent as abuse among heterosexual intimates. The most frequently reported type of domestic violence is physical abuse such as hitting, punching, pushing, arm-twisting, biting, and use of a weapon.
Many people think of the family as a safe haven in an unpredictable and sometimes frightening world. However, in reality violence probably occurs more often within families than in any other setting. Family violence can be directed toward children, spouses, or elderly family members.
