One of the greatest challenges facing the criminal justice system is the need to balance the rights of accused criminals against society's interest in imposing punishments on those convicted of crimes.
The criminal justice process starts with police investigating crimes and arresting those thought to be guilty. The process also includes the courts, which hear cases, make judgments about the guilt of the accused, and set punishment for those found guilty.
