  1. African-Americans are more likely than individuals of other races to be victims of violent crimes. According to 2002 statistics released by the U.S. Department of Justice, for every 1,000 persons in each racial group there were twenty-eight violent crimes committed against African-Americans, twenty-three committed against whites, and fifteen against persons of other races.
  2. According to the FBI's 2002 “Crime Clock” report, a property crime is committed every 3 second, a larceny theft every 4.5 second, a burglary every 14.7 second, a violent crime every 22.1 seconds, a robbery every 1.2 minutes, a forcible rape every 5.5 minutes, and a murder every 32.4 minutes.
  3. Among criminals surveyed by the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, 80% had encountered armed citizens but only 53% had ever not committed a crime because they were scared their victim was armed.
  4. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the total number of violent crimes in the U.S. declined steadily between 1993 and 2003 to a rate of almost 50% less.
