  1. During the 1956 World Games in Moscow, Dr. John Ziegler, a team physician for the U.S. weightlifting squad, developed anabolic steroids (synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone) in response to steroid use by the Russian team.
  2. Between 2003 and 2004, the most popular sport among female college athletes was soccer, followed by outdoor track, according to a report published by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
  3. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 required that colleges must have about the same percentage of female athletes as they have female undergraduates and that more money be spent on women's sports.
  4. A University of Cincinnati study in 2000 reported that, of the 648 Division I basketball and football players surveyed, 25.5 percent, had gambled on college sports events.

A professional athlete is paid to participate; an amateur athlete is one who participates merely as a pastime, not for pay. Athletes have been regarded as role models throughout history.
