Major Election Issues: Mitt Romney's Position
Romney opposes abortion except in the case of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother. He opposes Roe v. Wade and vetoed an emergency contraception bill in July 2005. As a 1994 Senate candidate, Romney supported abortion rights.
Romney believes No Child Left Behind has improved education but would like to see more focus on individual students rather than school progress. He believes education, particularly in the math and sciences, is key toward attaining better economic growth.
Romney supports drilling in the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) and using "clean coal" technology. While governor of Massachusetts, he opposed an offshore wind farm but outlined a plan to increase energy efficiency in state buildings and vehicles.
Romney believes that the United States cannot wait for science to determine the impact of human activity on climate change and supports a reduction of CO2 emissions through reducing oil consumption and increasing the use of alternative energy.
Romney believes the states should take a leading role in reforming health care. His plan includes aid for low-income families to purchase health care, improving health savings accounts, and putting caps on damages awarded in malpractice cases.
Romney believes reducing U.S. dependence on foreign sources of oil, increasing the size of the nation's military, and strengthening relationships with other nations are key to improving homeland security. Under Romney, the DHS gave Massachusetts's disaster response plan a passing grade.
Romney opposes the Bush-backed guest worker plan and opposes allowing illegal immigrants to gain legal status except through existing procedures. He proposes an improved system for employers to verify legal status of workers, including tamper-proof documentation.
Romney opposes same-sex marriage and civil unions.
Romney proposed an independent panel to formulate a plan to reform Social Security and believes individuals should have the option to contribute to personal retirement accounts.
Romney believes in free trade and proposed his "Conservative Blueprint for Strengthening the Economy" in December 2007 to add support to increased open markets. He also supports increased trade with China and the current U.S. embargo on Cuba. Romney supports Bush's National Missile Defense program.
Romney supported the invasion of Iraq. He also supported Bush's veto of an Iraq war spending bill that would have withdrawn most U.S. troops by March 2008 and Bush's "troop surge" plan to increase the number of troops in Iraq.
