Major Election Issues: Mike Huckabee's Position
Huckabee opposes abortion.
Huckabee believes in school of choice and an increase in charter schools. He is a strong proponent of music and the arts as essential to education.
Huckabee believes Americans have a moral obligation to protect Earth, and he campaigned for an amendment in Arkansas that dedicated money to conservation, including rebuilding the state's park system and purchasing land for conservation. While he supports short-term drilling in the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), his top priority is to completely eliminate U.S. dependence on oil.
Huckabee supports the use of alternative energy, including nuclear and clean coal, to reduce greenhouse gases as well as a "cap and trade" system for controlling carbon emissions.
Huckabee proposes a move from an employer-based to consumer-based health care system with a strong focus on preventative medicine.
Huckabee believes the key to homeland security is securing the nation's borders and increasing defense spending to have a larger standing army.
Huckabee believes Americans must secure the U.S. border, using methods including building a border fence, increasing the numbers of border patrol agents, and enforcing laws penalizing employers who hire illegal immigrants. He does not support amnesty or sanctuary.
Huckabee opposes same-sex marriage and civil unions. He supports the current "don't ask, don't tell" policy of the U.S. Armed Services, in which openly homosexual personnel are not allowed to serve.
Huckabee supports Bush's plan that allows workers to divert some Social Security payroll taxes into private retirement accounts.
Huckabee believes the United States should toughen its stance with Pakistan and support Israel in defending itself, including providing weapons and technology. He believes Bush's Pakistan policy has been counterproductive. He thinks America should focus on eliminating terrorists and creating a stable Middle East by educating itself about other cultures and by attacking the underlying conditions that breed terror. He believes that the creation of schools offering an alternative to the extremist madrassas is one key in creating a more stable Middle East.
Huckabee supports the Bush Iraq policy, saying the president has access to military and diplomatic information that is not publicly available. He also opposes proposals to cut funding for the war and believes U.S. troops should remain in Iraq until victory is achieved.
