Major Election Issues: Kent Mesplay's Position
Mesplay views abortion as a personal health issue. He supports reproductive rights and a woman's right to choose, but believes that increased access to contraception would be helpful in decreasing the number of unwanted pregnancies.
Mesplay believes No Child Left Behind should be dismantled. He supports federal funding for universal pre-kindergarten and charter schools. He believes the financial aid process for borrowing for college should be revised to reduce the costs to the borrower.
Mesplay is concerned with sustainability issues, including clean water and energy. He believes that Americans should focus on increased energy efficiency and on solar and wind power. He is opposed to any new nuclear power plants and is concerned about waste from those that already exist.
Mesplay believes that global climate change is a major public safety issue that must be addressed by focusing on conservation and clean energy technologies like wind and solar replacing the need for petroleum-based energy. He favors taxation on carbon emissions and emissions trading in which the allowed emissions for an entire industry are capped and then gradually reduced to mandatory international levels. He also advocates development of alternative fuels, higher gas mileage standards for vehicles, and promoting energy efficiency.
Mesplay believes medical care is a human right, and supports a single payer health insurance plan to provide at least a basic level of medical and dental care.
Mesplay believes that America is too close to a military state and should cease such measures as the National Defense Shield program, federal identity cards, increased monitoring of communications, military tribunals, and the threat of pre-emptive strikes on countries like Iran.
Mesplay believes that building a border wall is not a solution to the underlying problem of economic plight that brings illegal immigrants to the country. In the case of Mexico, he supports using micro-loans and other incentives within Mexico that would make economic opportunities better there. Believes current immigration policies should be changed to reflect the need that America has for labor that comes from outside the country, particularly in areas such as agriculture. He supports amnesty and a process for citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the United States.
Mesplay supports gay rights, including same-sex marriage and civil unions, as well as inclusion in anti-discrimination laws.
Mesplay supports increasing Social Security benefits to match cost of living increases.
Mesplay believes in America promoting nonviolence and diplomatic solutions, rather than the utilization of threats of violence and war.
Mesplay believes that U.S. involvement in Iraq made terrorism worse, but the current troop levels in Iraq should be maintained until a solution that involves the Iraqi people and regional leaders can be implemented. At that time, American military personnel should be gradually removed and international peace-keeping troops sent in. Money that is currently being spent on the military presence should instead be turned toward economic development in the country.
